Ambani’s 27 Story $1,000,000,000 Monstrosity

What do you think?

This might be the greatest show of opulence in human history.

He has a view of the ocean… and of slums where people defecate on dirt streets.

There are barbs here and there stating that the resources used on this home could have been better spent, that this building is vulgar, but I feel that he needs to be openly criticized for being…

Do we respect him for having so much money?

If he didn’t build the world’s first billion dollar home, would we know he was the 5th richest man in the world?

It is not just limited to this man though.

When I don’t give a quarter to a homeless person outside of the subway because I am saving up for some piece of technology — isn’t it the same concept? Clearly not to the extreme that Mukesh has taken it, but that feeling of self importance, that desire to have more than your neighbor, that unwillingness to share…

Two of the worst things I have seen in India come to mind:

A young boy, maybe 8 or 10, walking on the dirt side walk while chatting with a friend, casually came up to me — we were walking in opposite directions — he reached into the collar of his ripped and dirt colored white t-shirt and pulled a stub of an arm out and held his other skinny arm out. I have been conditioned, I didn’t flinch, and neither did he. That doesn’t make me a bad person… does it? You see mutilated children begging in the streets if you walk enough. The thing that was truly thought provoking was that just a few minutes later, I saw a 30 year old man, just filthy looking,  barely clothed, going from car to car putting his amputated arm against windows while people gave him looks of…

I think it is incredible that this chubster has an entire floor for a gym.

Another image burned into my mind was a 4 story mercedes benz dealership that had hundred thousand dollar cars on the 3rd story. The interesting part was that on either side of the dealership, there were people, families, living under 4 sticks and a piece of cloth — I knew they lived there because they were boiling water, their possessions sprawling, some sleeping — while someone pulls out of the dealership in a brand new benz.

What does it do to criticize such people?

I don’t think I am jealous that I can’t indulge in such opulence, I can’t imagine doing so.

There are millionaires and billionaires that don’t think of themselves as wealthy because they only look to those that have more. In our celebrity, television, and car centered society, it is easy to focus on those people that have more and ignore those that have less. It is disheartening when such wealthy people have such narrow vision.
